NORTH AUGUSTA STAR – Aiken Standard
Letter to the Editor
Has confidence in Hixon
This letter is written on behalf of Bill Hixon, candidate for House Seat District 83. I served as assistant to the president of Aiken Technical College for 18 years before retirement and had the privilege of working closely with Bill for six of those years. During my tenure he was chairman of the Aiken County Commission for Technical and Comprehensive Education for three years. As chair of the Commission, Bill was a very effective leader. He served on the Building and Finance Committee and played an important role in managing affairs of the college, including a budget of approximately $8 million, and approving programs that would create jobs for citizens who wanted a two-year degree or those desiring to advance to a four-year-degree. One of Bill’s passions was to develop programs to draw business and industry to our community, thereby creating more jobs. One of the highlights of his career was the development of a literacy program at the Graniteville Company. He witnessed adults who couldn’t read attain reading skills that enabled them to a better function in life. Bill would stop at nothing to help someone to better themselves. He worked effectively with two Aiken County Schools superintendents, Dr. Joe Brooks and Dr. Linda Eldridge. He also represented the college at meetings of the State Board for Technical Colleges. He served on the Commission of Higher Education — USCA and the Aiken Technical College Foundation Board as the college’s representative during his years as chair. He was responsible for the hiring process of the college’s third president. Upon completion of high school, Bill knew that he did not want to attend college. Neither did Sam Walton or Bill Gates. Instead, he chose to work with the real estate/insurance business that was established by his father in 1952. He has been a successful Realtor and insurance agent since graduating from North Augusta High School in 1976. Bill has served on many important committees and boards in our community and has always done an outstanding job. While Bill is not married and doesn’t have children, he has done the next best thing to help educate young adults. He has made himself available to fight for educational programs that will result in jobs and skills needed to survive in our ever-changing economy. He has a world of valuable experience that will help him make wise decisions. He is a proven commodity. We have seen him in action and know that he will fight for what is right and best for District 83. I wholeheartedly support Bill Hixon for House Seat District. 83. I hope that you will too.
